Did you know that as a PPAO member, you have access to extended health care (EHC) with core travel insurance at special rates? EHC with core travel coverage helps you prepare for the financial burden of unexpected medical and travel expenses. Whether you’re home or travelling, make sure you and your loved ones are protected.

Use EHC with core travel insurance when you need:

  • Prescription drugs
  • New glasses, contacts or hearing aids
  • A massage therapist, physiotherapist or other registered specialist under paramedical services, as listed in the group insurance contract
  • A private duty nurse
  • Medical products or equipment
  • Coverage for emergency medical travel expenses and more

You're eligible to apply for EHC with core travel insurance if you meet all the criteria below:

  • A permanent resident of Canada
  • Between the ages of 55 and 76
  • Insured by a Government Health Insurance Plan (GHIP)
  • A member in good standing of the Police Pensioners Association of Ontario on the date of your application 
  • Covered under your employer’s or union’s group plan on the day preceding retirement or termination of employment, or covered by your employer’s sponsored Health Spending Account, within 60 days of your request for coverage

In Quebec, you are required to have prescription drug insurance through the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) or have group drug coverage through a group policy.

You must have coverage for your dependants to be eligible.

Apply without proof of good health - you can apply for coverage without proof of good health, if we get your application within 60 days of your existing group insurance plan or HSA end date.

You and your dependants must be insured for the same benefits.

What’s covered under EHC?

Extended health care
Maximum lifetime benefit
  • $1 million per insured person for all eligible expenses (excluding core travel amounts, described separately)
Prescription drugs
  • Maximum: $2,500 per plan year
  • Vaccination at $150
  • Drugs reimbursed by your provincial health care plan*:
    • 80% of the amount paid by you, but not reimbursed by your provincial health care plan
  • Drugs not reimbursed by your provincial health care plan*:
    • 80% of costs covered for prescription drugs

*Drugs covered under the provincial drug formulary such as ODB, RAMQ, Fair Pharmacare.

Reference Drug Program is applicable

Mandatory generic drugs - plan covers the price of the lowest cost interchangeable (typically generic) drug, even if the physician indicates “no substitution”.

Paramedical services
(acupuncturist, chiropractor, massage therapist, naturopath, osteopath or osteopathic practitioner, physiotherapist, podiatrist or chiropodist, speech therapist)
  • 80% of costs covered up to a maximum of $550 per specialist, and a combined maximum of $700 per insured person, per plan year
  • Mental health practitioner / psychologists / psychotherapist / social worker - $60 per visit up to 10 visits per plan year and limited to the combined maximum of $600 per insured per plan year
  • One X-ray for chiropractors, podiatrist, chiropodist in a plan year
Medical supplies
  • Maximum - $6,000 per calendar year
    • 80% of costs covered
  • Reimbursement will be made after the eligible portion (where applicable) has been paid by a GHIP, for the following services:
    • Wigs - maximum of $500 per lifetime
    • Casts, splints, trusses, braces or crutches – maximum $500 per calendar year
    • Hearing aids - $500 every 36-months
    • Surgical brassieres - two per insured person, per plan year
    • Support stockings - two per insured person, per plan year
    • Orthotics - $200 in a calendar year
    • Glucometer - $300 per five calendar years
    • Wheelchairs - $2,500 lifetime
Accidental dental
  • $5,000 lifetime maximum
Vision
  • 80% of costs covered to a maximum of $300 per insured person over a 24-month period
    • Eye wear
    • Laser eye surgery
  • One eye examination - $75 maximum over two calendar years

What’s covered under core travel?

(This coverage applies to an unlimited number of trips per year, with a limit of 92 days per trip. There’s a total combined policy maximum of $2,000,000, unless otherwise noted.)

Trip Cancellation Up to $6,000 (less available refunds) for the prepaid, non-refundable and non-transferable portion of your travel arrangements 
Trip Interruption/Delay Up to $6,000 (less available refunds) for the extra cost of a one-way economy fare, and the cost of any unused prepaid land arrangements

**Core travel insurance doesn't cover everything. Please refer to the certificate of insurance for full terms and conditions, including limitations and exclusions. If you or any of your dependants require medical assistance while travelling, you must contact Securian Canada's emergency travel assistance provider within 48 hours or as soon as possible.

When does coverage begin?

If you’re applying without proof of good health, approved coverage begins the day after the termination date of your previous group insurance.

If you’re applying with proof of good health, coverage begins on the first day of the month, after approval.

What’s not covered?

We will not pay for the costs of:

  • Services or supplies payable or available (regardless of any waiting list) under any government-sponsored plan or program, except as described below under Integration with government programs
  • Implanted prosthetic or medical devices (examples of these devices are gastric lap bands, breast implants, spinal implants and hip implants)
  • Equipment that Securian Canada considers ineligible (examples of this equipment are orthopaedic mattresses, exercise equipment, air-conditioning or air-purifying equipment, whirlpools and humidifiers)
  • Any services or supplies that are not usually provided to treat an illness, including experimental or investigational treatments. Experimental or investigational treatments mean treatments that are not approved by Health Canada or other government regulatory body for the general public
  • Services or supplies that do not qualify as medical expenses under the Income Tax Act (Canada)
  • Services or supplies for which no charge would have been made in the absence of this coverage

We will not pay benefits when the claim is for an illness resulting from:

  • The hostile action of any armed forces, insurrection or participation in a riot or civil commotion

1. Spouse: The insured’s spouse by marriage or under any other formal union recognized by law, or a partner of the opposite sex or of the same sex who is living with the insured and has been living with the insured in a conjugal relationship. Only one person at a time can be covered as an insured’s spouse under this contract

2. Child: A child, other than a foster child, of the insured or the insured’s spouse, who does not have a spouse and who is:

  • Under 21, or
  • Age 21 or over but under age 25 who is a full-time student attending an educational institution recognized under the Income Tax Act (Canada) and is dependant on the insured for financial support.

A child who becomes disabled before the limiting age and remains continuously disabled, qualifies as long as the child:

  • Is incapable of financial self-support because of a disability,
  • Depends on the insured for financial support, and
  • Does not have a spouse.

The insured must provide Securian Canada proof of the above within 6 months of the date the child attains the limiting age.
